As a kid, almost 50 years ago, my aunt gave me a commemorative coin set of all British coins in the year that Queen Elizabeth was crowned. It was encased in plastic. That was what got me started into coin collecting.
Then I met a coin dealer named Cory in San Francisco who encouraged me to become an expert in one type of coin; not that I'm an expert, but I'm fair at grading and I know a fair amount of history on the Morgans. I sold all my coins in those days and started buying Morgans, and putting them into their cardboard book each by year and place of mint.
I love the Morgan as it is a beautiful coin. They are expensive and there are a lot of them. Some run into the millions of dollars. After some 50 years, I now have them all. Then I started to collect Peace Dollars. There are only a few, and they are not as expensive. It took me one year to get all the Peace Dollars against almost 40 years for the Morgans. My Peace Dollar collection as a whole is a better collection; all of the coins but one is at a grade of MS-62 or higher.
Now what? My goal is achieved in having all the coins. Well, now I'm going to sytematically upgrade the coins, trading up to better quality where I need to. Only this time, I will make money as I can sell the coin after I've upgraded it. I've already started to do this and some coins that I paid $12.00 for, I've sold now for $50.00. Of course, the replacement coin is more expensive but my collection is a better one.
The point of all this: It was and continues to be fun. If one wants something, one has to set goals which are achievable; once achieved, one needs to raise the goals. In the end, we learn that the act of trying to achieve a goal is often more important to us than the goal itself. And, finally, we can achieve anything we want in this world if we try hard enough and don't give up. Dedication and Perserverence are the most important ingredients in Success and Achieving one's Goals.
As an aside, not that it matters, but I started out collecting with just a few dollars I had saved at the time, or trading in other coins. Today, I estimate my two collections as being worth about $50,000.00,but I never once did this for the money.
